CDSA, Xcapism Learning Host ‘Beat the Hacker’ Event

MESA’s March 25 “Beat the Hacker” event, held in collaboration with the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA) and Xcapism Learning, featured four teams of security experts battling it out to see who would emerge first from a virtual escape room.

The contest combined a number of puzzles with educational videos to offer a unique way to inform and train employees of the importance of maintaining good cybersecurity discipline. Only by working together to solve a series of challenges and tasks could each team stop the perpetrator Philip O’Phish from leaking top-secret files to the media.

With nine games covering a wide range of topics — from phishing emails, pass-phrases, rogue text messages and the importance of not sharing too much personal information on your social media accounts — the training aimed to be fun, engaging and highly memorable.

Xcapism’s games can be tailored to individual companies and learning is further supported by comic-style communications, which cover all major threats to online safety, with topics on cybersecurity and data privacy.

“Even though you know Xcapism is a game, having to think quickly about how to avoid a public hack scenario certainly created an adrenalin buzz, not least because we’ve probably all been close to situations where this has happened — and you don’t want this to happen on your watch. Teamwork and prior training certainly helps,” said Mathew Gilliat Smith, EVP of Convergent Risks.

The Xcapism team added: “’Beat the Hacker’s’ aim is to offer an experience that will really help people to remember more about digital safety through fun and a hint of adrenaline as the clock ran down! It’s been incredible working with MESA and we had some amazing people play on the day. Hopefully they had a good time too.”
