Cyberhaven Goes Beyond DLP in Dec. 1 Webinar

Data loss prevention (DLP) has its pros and cons when it comes to developing a good strategy for protecting your company’s sensitive data and intellectual property in today’s cloud-first, work-from-home era.

During the Dec. 1 webinar “Beyond DLP: Protecting Sensitive Data with Context and Perfect Recall” Jared Thorkelson, director of business development for Cyberhaven, will cover why some have given up on DLP, share ideas around how to improve your approach with context and perfect recall, and compare DLP to, of all things, Christopher Nolan’s classic film Memento.

“For this event, we’ve decided to pull from one of our more popular blog posts, drawing parallels between data loss prevention technologies, and key concepts from Memento,” Thorkelson said. “What’s so interesting about the film is the concept of short-term memory loss, which is a legitimate problem for traditional DLP technologies. We’ll underscore why DLP’s short-term memory loss is so damaging to its overall effectiveness — and how Cyberhaven’s innovative approach addresses these concerns.”

His presentation will cover top considerations when deploying a solution to protect sensitive data; why “memory” is important to protecting data; why apps like Zoom and WhatsApp have made your DLP far less effective; and will offer a different way to think about protecting your data.

“DLP tools lack the ability to detect even the most basic elements of data context, such as data origin, data creator, data interaction with user or application — and data recall,” Thorkelson said. “This makes accurate sensitive data detection very challenging — and accurate data protection nearly impossible.

“Data loss prevention has been the go-to technology for data protection for more than 15 years. Market-maturity notwithstanding, most companies struggle with ineffective DLP, either accepting data protection disappointment or deciding enough is enough and replacing legacy tools,” he added. “Cyberhaven is positioned for companies that can’t afford to accept disappointment in data protection and decide, ‘enough is enough.’”
