Richey May Technology to Talk ‘Ethical Hacking’ at Oct. 20 M&E Day

In late July, roughly 130 celebrities — from President Obama, to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, to billionaire Bill Gates — had their Twitter accounts hacked, with the attack netting scammers more than $100,000 in bitcoin by posting as the celebrities.

Michael Wylie, director of cybersecurity services for Richey May Technology Solutions, said it was exactly the type of breach that can be avoided with internal penetration tests and social engineering.

“Not all social engineering and penetration tests are equated equal,” said Wylie, who will present the breakout session “What Do Joe Biden & Kim Kardashian Have In Common?” at the Oct. 20 Media & Entertainment Day, a live, worldwide virtual event, taking place during the all-new NAB Show New York digital experience.

“Joe Biden and Kim Kardashian learned that the hard way. Attend my talk at the Media & Entertainment Day and you won’t have to learn the hard way. We’ll discuss some campfire stories that all start with social engineering and then touch on how proactive security testing can mitigate attackers taking you to the cleaners.”

Now that your teams are dispersed out of the office, attackers are eager to take advantage of new vulnerabilities that have emerged. Before the pandemic, the detection of a “vishing” campaign like the one against Twitter would have spread around the office quickly. Today, with a decentralized workforce, it could take hours or days for employees to be aware of the attack, and thus allowing it to go on longer.

It requires self-security penetration tests and social engineering to fix your potential weak spots before the hackers find them. Wylie will share with M&E Day attendees — vendors and studios alike — how to do just that by taking on “ethical hacking engagements.”

M&E Day is sponsored by IBM Security, Microsoft Azure, SHIFT, Akamai, Cartesian, Chesapeake Systems, ContentArmor, Convergent Risks, Digital Nirvana, edgescan, EIDR, ICVR, PK, Richey May Technology Solutions, STEGA and Synamedia, and is being produced by MESA, in cooperation with NAB Show New York, and in association with the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA) and the Hollywood IT Society (HITS).
