Instagram Is Giving Users More Control Over Their Privacy

This article is more than 4 years old.

Instagram is giving its users a little more control over their privacy, particularly when it comes to third-party apps you connect to the service. You'll have an easier way to manage all of the third-party apps that are linked to your Instagram account.

From the security section in the settings, you can access an "apps and websites" option. There, you’ll see all the other services that have access to your Instagram account and remove them from the list if you choose. At that point, they won't have access to new activity on your account.

It's a useful feature, and one that's long overdue. For years, its sibling service Facebook and Twitter have both offered centralized ways to see which apps can access your accounts on those services.

Instagram will also update its authorization screen that pops up when you try to link a third-party service. It'll detail all the account information the app wants access to, and you can either approve or cancel each access request from the authorization screen.

Instagram will roll out the updates over the next six months, presumably to give third-party developers some time to prepare for the authorization changes.
