Content protection and multiscreen TV solutions provider NAGRA and DISH Network marked a legal victory Nov. 12, taking home a judgment against the Kodi-based SetTV streaming service, which DISH and NAGRA’s NagraStar arm argued facilitated pay TV piracy.
First filed in early May, the suit the SetTV streaming television platform of rebroadcasting programming content obtained from a DISH Network satellite signal without any authorization. SetTV shuttered in June 2018, just 16 months after launching in February 2017, after a Florida court granted DISH’s restraining order against the service.
Major studios, Netflix, Amazon and others all filed similar suits earlier this year against SetTV.
The confidential settlement agreement between DISH and SetTV included admissions of liability by SetTV, along with an agreed judgment and permanent injunction, permanently shutting down the SetTV service, web sites and devices.
“NAGRA continues its efforts to investigate and take legal action against anyone involved in the circumvention of their security technology, online video piracy or the unauthorized rebroadcast or theft of DISH content or services,” NAGRA said in a statement. “NAGRA has a strong history of success combining deep intelligence about global pirate networks with real-time monitoring, take-down and litigation services, as well as forensic watermarking technologies, to defend valuable content against piracy.”
“DISH Network and NagraStar continue their efforts to investigate and take legal action against anyone involved in the circumvention of their security technology or the resulting rebroadcast or theft of DISH content or services,” a DISH statement read.
NAGRA has provided security solutions for DISH since 1995.
