Civolution, Ensequence Team Up on Synchronized TV

November 30, 2011 · Posted in RSS Feeds · Comments Off
Interactive TV software developer Ensequence and watermarking technology provider Civolution are teaming on an “automatic content recognition” product integration effort, enabling synchronization of television broadcasts with interactive content on connected devices including tablets and smartphones. The combination of Civolution’s watermarking technology with Ensequence’s iTV Manager platform identifies what viewers are watching on their televisions or PCs, and enables programmers and content publishers to create, manage and deliver two-screen experiences for both TV shows and commercials. Civolution’s VideoSync - 2nd Screen product allows for the automatic identification of the TV channel being watched and the content being played. Upon identification, it enables accurate time synchronization between content played on a TV set and supplementary content on a portable device such as a tablet or smartphone. The Ensequence iTV Manager platform enables the creation of the interactive content and handles the timely and synchronous delivery of the content to trigger real-time interactivity. The watermarking technology used for ACR handles distribution delays seamlessly and also supports time-shifted viewing. “We are really pleased to bring such innovative interactive experiences to the market with Ensequence and respond to consumers’ appetite for TV interaction,” says Jean-Michel Masson, Civolution’s SVP of watermarking solutions, in a statement. “By enabling precise synchronization between the TV programs and commercials on the main viewing screen and the interactive content on a secondary device, we are enhancing the user’s overall TV viewing experience, offering a richer and deeper level of engagement.”

Nearly 1 Million Xbox 360 Consoles Sold Last Week

November 30, 2011 · Posted in RSS Feeds · Comments Off
Microsoft enjoyed the strongest sales week ever for its seven-year-old Xbox 360 console during last week, moving more more than 960,000 units in the U.S., according to the company. Black Friday deals spurred demand, with Microsoft reporting that holiday shoppers purchased more than 800,000 Xbox 360 units within a 24-hour period. Microsoft’s rivals in the videogame space also had reason to smile during the Thanksgiving holiday. Nintendo recorded sales of some 500,000 Wii units on Black Friday — fueled by a $99 Walmart promotion — while Sony also reported “strong demand” for the PlayStation 3 (via Industry Gamers). Healthy holiday sales of the consoles bode well not only for videogame developers and manufacturers, but for digital entertainment distributors as well, as more console owners connect their systems to the Internet. Microsoft itself hosted a week of Thanksgiving deals on the online Xbox Live Marketplace, offering a discount on premium memberships to the gaming network as well as price reductions on select videogames.

US judge orders hundreds of sites “de-indexed” from Google, Facebook (Ars Technica)

After a series of one-sided hearings, luxury goods maker Chanel has won recent court orders against hundreds of websites trafficking in counterfeit luxury goods. A federal judge in Nevada has agreed that Chanel can seize the domain names in question and transfer them all to US-based registrar GoDaddy. The judge also ordered “all Internet search engines” and “all social media websites”—explicitly naming Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Bing, Yahoo, and Google—to “de-index” the domain names and to remove them from any search results. The case has been a remarkable one. Concerned about counterfeiting, Chanel has filed a joint suit in Nevada against nearly 700 domain names that appear to have nothing in common. When Chanel finds more names, it simply uses the same case and files new requests for more seizures....

‘Cord-Avoiders’ to Reduce Cable and Satellite TV Rolls in 2012, Analysts Say (Advertising Age)

November 30, 2011 · Posted in RSS Feeds · Comments Off
About 200,000 fewer subscribers will ante up for paid TV services in 2012, analysts predicted Monday. Credit Suisse analysts, projecting the modest contraction in a new report, blamed the coming lag on weak formation of new households and a growing number of new households that are avoiding pricey TV subscriptions in the sour economy. Emphasizing that they weren’t “sounding the cord-cutting alarm” and remain optimistic on cable and satellite sector businesses, the analysts instead identified the immediate problem as “cord-avoiders” -- households using pay-TV alternatives like Hulu and Netflix that may not return to cable and satellite services when the economy improves....

HBO To Cord Cutters: You’ll Never See Our Shows (paidContent)

HBO is cementing its reputation as a trail-blazer with a new batch of hit shows and, more recently, a hugely popular mobile offering. But the company is determined to remain a traditionalist when it comes to its relation with TV distributors. HBO Co-President Eric Kessler told a gathering of industry boffins this morning in New York that there is no chance his company will make shows like True Blood or The Wire available to digital non-subscribers. HBO currently has around 30 million customers, all of whom must buy its content as an upgrade from their cable or satellite package....

Time Warner Cable Inc. and U.S. pay- TV companies, weighing how to profit from surging Internet demand spurred by Netflix Inc. and Hulu, are on the verge of instituting new fees on Web-access customers who use the most. At least one major cable operator will institute so-called usage-based billing next year, predicts Craig Moffett, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in New York. He said Cox Communications Inc., Charter Communications Inc. or Time Warner Cable may be first to charge Web-access customers for the amount of data they consume, not just transmission speed....
