Sony DADC’s Digital Services Unit Enables Uploading of User-Created Content from PlayStation to YouTube

September 30, 2011 · Posted in RSS Feeds · Comments Off
PlayStation users who create their own Machinima productions within PlayStation Home, the game network’s interactive social environment, can now capture and share their creations on YouTube thanks to a new virtual camera developed by LOOT, Sony DADC’s digital services development team. Previously, DADC says, users who wanted to capture video from virtual environments had to invest in separate PC capture and recording equipment. The LOOT Active Camera integrates this functionality into the PlayStation Home experience, enabling users to record, edit, and save videos, as well as share them on YouTube and across social networks. “With more than 100 Machinima-related items already available in the LOOT store, the addition of the LOOT Active Camera will help Machinima artists take their productions to the next level and offer a fun new activity in PlayStation Home to all our customers,” said David Sterling, vice president of business development at Sony DADC, in a statement. Launch of the LOOT Active Camera coincides with Sony’s issuing of a PlayStation Home update on Thursday (via Digital Trends).

Technicolor, Microsoft Sell Stakes in DRM Developer ContentGuard

Intellectual property company Pendrell Corp. plans to acquire 90.1 percent of digital rights management (DRM) developer ContentGuard Holdings from Microsoft and Technicolor, in a cash transaction valued at $90.1 million. Time Warner, which jointly acquired ContentGuard with Microsoft and Technicolor in 2005, will retain its 9.9 percent stake in the company. Technicolor announced the sale on Thursday; although Microsoft has not commented publicly on the transaction, a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission confirms the company as ContentGuard's majority shareholder (via TechFlash). Originally spun out of Xerox PARC in 2000, ContentGuard has developed content protection technology for a range of connected devices, from DVD players to mobile phones. Approximately 50 percent of mobile handsets worldwide license ContentGuard, according to Pendrell. Pendrell and Time Warner said they would work together to accelerate growth of ContentGuard’s technical solutions and licensing programs. Technicolor in a statement said that the sale was in line with its corporate strategy “to focus on the monetization of its IP assets”; the company added that it will record a capital gain estimated at $11.5 million at the closing of the transaction.
