Blockbuster To Analysts: Studios Committed To Brick-And-Mortar For The Long Term

While Blockbuster emphasizes the growth potential of its kiosk, DVD-by-mail, and digital on demand businesses in its latest earnings report, the company is busy reassuring analysts of the continuing viability of its physical retail outlets. Studios, said Blockbuster chairman and CEO Jim Keyes in an earnings call, are “of course concerned about the short term and will work with us in the short term. But for the long term, they’re aligned with us in that they want to see the brick-and-mortar store survive and to facilitate the cross-channel transformation.” (per The Wall Street Journal) In a Feb. 24 statement detailing the company’s $434.9 million net loss for the fourth quarter of 2009, Keyes said Blockbuster expects to add 7,000 Blockbuster Express rental kiosks to the market this year through its partnership with NCR. The company also looks to grow its by-mail channel and digital Blockbuster On Demand service through new “collaborative partnerships,” Keyes said.

Research: One In Four Consumers Connecting New TVs To Internet

Illustrating consumers’ rising interest in viewing Web-based video content on their televisions, more than one quarter of all TVs purchased by American consumers last month have been connected to the Internet, according to a survey conducted by research firm iSuppli. Among U.S. consumers that purchased new televisions in January 2010, 27.5 percent indicated their sets were connected to the Internet, either though the internal capabilities of their TVs, or via external devices, such as digital video boxes or game consoles. Research: TV Shipments Posted Modest Growth In 2009

Global TV shipments in 2009 exceeded analysts’ recession-minded expectations, growing by 2% as consumers snapped up discounted products. Overall shipments grew to 211 million units, according to research firm DisplaySearch. What’s more, LCD and other flat panel TV technologies enjoyed higher growth in 2009 on a unit basis than during 2008, rising 37% vs. 34%, respectively. EDCI Holdings, Inc. has announced that the potential purchaser of Entertainment Distribution Company, LLC's German subsidiary has terminated further negotiations. As the supply chain services provider disclosed last month, the cooperation of its Universal Music Group customer was critical to any such transaction. Research: 32% Of Broadband-Enabled Netflix Subscribers Stream To Their TVs

Nearly two-thirds of Netflix users that also have a home broadband connection are now using the company’s ‘Watch Instantly’ streaming video service, according to TDG. While 33% of broadband-enabled Netflix subscribers view the service's movie and TVshow streams exclusively on their PCs, 8% view the content exclusively on their TVs, and 24% use both their PCs and TVs. The percentages, TDG says, establish Netflix as the “gold standard” of what the research firm calls “over-the-top” streaming video services to DVD players, game consoles, and other set-top consumer electronics.
